Becky Howson is a textile artist based in Birmingham, UK.
Becky begins each piece of work with a series of observational studies by drawing, painting and photography. Images are then developed through sampling, using a variety of textile techniques. Screen printing, hand embroidery, machine embroidery, appliqué, computer aided design and digital printing. Its at this point Becky will decide what combination of the techniques to use for each individual piece.
Becky develops ideas by celebrating everyday objects that may be taken for granted such as an old pair of shoes or a well-worn handbag. These objects can be functional household objects that may not have many decorative elements but by drawing upon the use of printing methods and stitching, the finished outcome is an illustrative response with a whimsical, fun outcome.
Becky has developed her aesthetic through completing a degree in Textile Design at the University of Derby. Further research into the role of traditional textile techniques and new technologies in personal work was completed at Nottingham Trent University, with a Masters in Fashion and Textiles.
The processes that Becky employs to complete work are versatile and can be applied to canvases, garments and accessories. Allowing a unique visual response to the objects that surround us in everyday life.
Becky combines her professional practice with teaching various Art and Design disciplines at Further Education level.
